Eligibility: Competitors must be between the ages of 7-21, as of January
1, 2009. The ADC welcomes all nationalities, for we are an equal opportunity
organization. This is strictly a student competition. Dancers with a signed
contract of any sort with a professional company is not allowed to enter the
competition. This also includes any dancer who has been employed professionally
in the past, even if currently not holding the position. However,
pre-professionals, with an un-paid position, are eligible. Teachers are not
permitted to compete even if within the age confines.
The performing Arts Sector of the competition is NOT
bound by the same Preliminary Round rules of the Ballet Competition.
The Master Classes given during the preliminary round may be taken by
the performing arts participants, but is NOT mandatory, and classes
will ONLY be offered in Ballet technique and Classical &
Contemporary Dance Variations.
Competitors may perform more than one solo. However, the entry with the
highest score will be the one in consideration for High Score. Thus,
one competitor will not be awarded two places in the Top Scores of the
Age-Division.
Performers
may not compete against themselves in a Duo/Trio, at least 50% must be
different people. It is permissible to compete against yourself in
Ensembles.
The ADC is scheduled on a first come, first served basis. So, to secure your spot, register well before the deadline.
Description of Categories:
- Jazz- A performance that utilizes jazz technique such as splits, isolations, leaps, etc.
- Lyrical- A performance choreographed to interpret the lyrics or mood of the music.
- Open-
A performance which is a combination of any of the previous categories,
and which doesn’t exactly fit any of the other descriptions. This is
strictly a dance competition, so dancing is essential in the routine.
**NOTE: If a routine consists of ANY
gymnastic tricks, the performance must be placed in the Open
Category. Be sure to place the entry in the correct category, for
deductions will occur.
Age Determination:
- The
average age will determine the age division for duo/trio & Groups.
Do not use decimals; round down. Ex: average age 14.9 = 14. So, this
entry will be in the JUNIOR age division.
- Names, Ages, and Birth dates of all competitors must appear on the official performers list form or it will not be accepted.
Additional Rules:
- The name of a routine may not be the same name as the dance studio.
- General
props are permitted in any of the performance categories, however no
dangerous props: Ex, fire, knives, swords or pyrotechnics. The stage
must be cleaned in a timely manner after a routine that has left
articles on stage such as confetti, feathers, etc. All props must be in
place and also removed within 1.5 minutes.
- The
ADC values age-appropriate dances. If the judges consider either the
costuming or the choreography to be inappropriate, immediate
disqualification or point reductions may occur.
- If
a group loses a member right before the competition and drops below the
original number registered, they may still compete in the Larger
Division. Ex: A group of 10, registered as Large Group, loses 1 member,
giving them 9, and putting them in the Small Group division, they may
still compete as a Large Group. If this circumstance occurs,
immediately contact The ADC office, so no points will be deducted from
the groups score on the day of competition.
